Rockbrook United Methodist Church
History

As United Methodists, our history goes back to 1760 when Methodist colonists arrived in America, sent by John Wesley, an Anglican priest and college professor. The colonists’ task was simple – preach and teach. The edge of the frontier found these enthusiastic disciples teaching classes in small groups and preaching wherever they might. Following this dedication to learning, spiritual well-being and ministry to all people, Methodists have founded schools, hospitals, and care facilities for children, youth and adults. Nebraska Wesleyan University carries John Wesley’s name. Other examples of outreach include Nebraska Methodist Hospital of Omaha, Region 7 Health Center in Scottsbluff, the Hester Home in Benkelman, the Crowell Memorial Home in Blair, and Epworth Village in York.

The old building

In the late 1950’s, we witnessed an evangelistic movement to the outer fringes of west Omaha. The Methodist churches named Maplewood, St. Luke, and Westwood Heights (later renamed Faith Westwood) were founded through the combined mission work of the General Board of Global Ministries, the Omaha District, and St. Paul UMC in Benson. Especially important to our history was the year 1959 when a group of avid Methodists chartered a congregation of ROCKbrook Methodist Church.. The first building constructed at our current location was the tin building, which now serves as the “Through the Years” childcare center. In 1968, the Evangelical and United Brethren churches merged to become the United Methodist Church. Our church name thus became ROCKbrook United Methodist Church. In 2009, we celebrate 50 years of serving our Lord as a community of believers.
